I'm looking for a summer job teaching english, so I need to investigate the certifications required. The job i'm applying for requires a TEFL, which I don't have, but I have been teaching for some years and don't really want to do the hassle. Does anybody know about the viability of fake TEFL's or the verification process. Also I am considering getting a TEFL, anybody know a good economical online TEFL course.......

Hi there.

I completed a TEFL course 2 years ago and have been teaching ever since. I love it! I did a 4 week course in Prague (TEFL Worldwide Prague) and it really helped me get a job and feel good about my skills. Any job that you get that does NOT require a TEFL CERT will pay you waaay less. So be careful. Also, I wouldn't "fake" one. You won't have the skills to back it up.

I totally would NOT do an online certifacation course. Online courses are really not recognized by most employers. For one reason, you won’t get the necessary teaching practice during the course and you won’t be able to be observed by experienced trainers in order to find out what you are doing right or wrong. For another, most online courses are less than 100 hours. TEFL courses in general are recognized internationally as long as they meet the industry standard of being at least 100 hours, having a minimum of 6 hours of teaching practice observed by an experienced trainer, and having qualified teacher trainers. The course I did was 124 hours and offers 8 to 10 hours of teaching practice observed by our trainers. The trainers were cool and had something like 10 years of EFL experience and teacher training experience each.

Also, with an online course you can’t expect much job guidance. During and after my course the staff at TEFL Worldwide helped me with information on current job openings in numerous countries, contacts for language schools and tips on finding a jobs all around the world. I had a job 2 weeks after. That was rad. :)

I hope this helps. Just don't do an online course. You will be wasting your money.

Good luck!

If you are going to teach EFL, get a proper qualification. Can you answer ANY grammar question? What are tense and aspect, modality, count and mass determiners? Can you teach grammar to a multi-national class of beginners WITHOUT explaining or using their first language (which you don't know in any case)? What's collocation? Why does it matter? What's a lexical set? Can you tell a structural syllabus from a lexical syllabus? What do you know about intonation? How do you teach it? What's discourse analysis? How do you get Japanese students to distinguish between 'rice' and 'lice', and why do they confuse them in the first place? Do you know what PET, KET, FCE, CAE, CPE and IELTS are?

EFL is getting horribly dumbed down, and we all lose in the end. When I was a director of studies I would never employ anyone who had less than a CELTA or a Trinity Certificate. I would have had to be desperate before I'd take on anybody with a 20 hour 'TEFL weekend'. What can anybody learn in 20 hours?

I've been teaching ESL overseas for almost eight years and I've never needed a TEFL certificate. I got my first job on the strength of my degrees and I got the rest on the strength of accumulated experience.
