I have taught for 3 years at different schools and different levels and it does not feel like the right match for me. I love writing and working with kids, but I don't know what careers I could transfer into without having to go back for years of schooling.

This is a good question. I'm in the same boat. It's difficult to find a career that's related to education but not still education. Depending on where you live, look at educational supply companies, textbook publishers, your LEA central office, your state department of instruction ... those are some ideas that will keep you in education but not still teaching.

Are there any museums or zoos in your area? You could work as an educator at those places, which would still allow you to work with children without all the day-to-day classroom duties. Your writing skills could be utilized in those settings by writing information articles for the place.

Another idea might be to be an educational columnist for your local newspaper.

What about adult education? Or designing educational materials? In fact, I recently saw a web help-wanted advertisement for what looks like a start-up that involves educational materials. I will try to find it and copy it below.

Have you thought about being a social worker or a counselor? Those are great positions if you love kids but also like to write.

Go back to school and get a masters in some kind of physiology. Open your own little office.

You don't have to be teaching, you can be a curriculum specialist or something similar. I know teachers that have only been a couple of years in classrooms and have moved to administration.
