Question about pursuing a career in K12 computer science education.?

Question

I am a freshman in college. The education preparation program at my school--and most schools that I have looked at--only offer specialization in mathematics K12. If I want to become a K12 computer science teacher, what steps should I take?

A few ideas I've had are:
-go with the math education program and acquire a CS minor
-double major in regular math and CS and separately go for an education degree after I graduate

What should I do?

With the advent of No Child Left Behind, most states are requiring single subject teachers, for example math teachers, to hold a BA/BS in the subject that they are teaching along with a teaching credential. If you would like to teach computer science it may be safer to major in computer science as well. The rate at which the new teaching laws and guidelines are changing is outrageous. Majoring in CS also may be a big help down the road.

In the state of South Carolina there is a program called PACE. What this program allowed me to do is major in a non teaching field and teach that subject. I have a BS in Information System and I teach Computer Networking, Project Lead the Way classes and Computer Repair. Once in the program i had to take 3 graduate level education classes but I was teaching during that time. It takes 3 years. The best part is I just finished and I can teach business/computer classes and if I wanted to leave the field and get a IT job I can. The best of both worlds. If I am right, all states have a similar program.

I do not know what state you are in but most states do not have official programs that certify you for computer teacher...in NY where I am teaching Graphic Design and Photography I got my job because I have a Master's in Educational Technology and experience in the field...look for any programs that include Educational Tech., Integrated Educational Tech. etc...good luck

also you should have an advisor who can give ou specific state requirements...

hi, talk on your occupation counselor. visit an open day or go down and chat with human beings on the colleges you have an pastime in and ask the IT branch/school and technology branch approximately your degree. do a sprint diagnosis.
