I am thinking of becoming a teacher in the state of maryland and I was told I must pass the praxis I & II. Does anyone have any real life advice or information about these test? I have read the official documentation but I feel like something is still missing. Any info would help!

Hi...I am licensed in Iowa which required the Praxis I...I just recently graduated from U Of Iowa and am now taking tests to finalize my licensure in IL. One thing you will find in this profession...tests will always be a part of your life...so don't fret. The Praxis I was not difficult. I took it on a computer and was able to see my results immediately after completing the exam. If you have this option...do it. Right now I am waaaaiiitttiiinnggg for the results of my final IL test...I think this is probably the worst things about these tests. I would recommend buying a Praxis I study guide book and def checking out the study guides online...I did and it really helped. I think you'll find you are okay with most of the content (it sort of like a bit more challenging ACT)...mostly, the study guides are good because they make you aware of the test format.

If you are thinking about becoming a teacher my advice would be to not let the prospect of all these hoops you have to jump through to get in the classroom get you down. Once you are in the classroom in front of your kids it's AWESOME!

The Praxis I is very easy--just a basic test of math and English (some states even allow you to opt out if your GPA is high enough). Praxis II is geared more to your grade level/content but you will receive adequate prep in your education classes (you take the Praxis II after you have completed most of your education courses). There are also many prep books available to help you prepare. I have been a teacher for a few years and passed all Praxis exams on the first try with little study time. You will be fine.

I just took the Praxis ParaPro Assessment in April. It consisted of questions that I would be asked if helping in the High School level,

like basic algebra, writing, and reading comp. I passed with no problems.

If a study guide is available, it would be a good idea to purchase one. Other than that, just relax.

Relax - Take each test one at a time. Look at the website for the praxis online and just relax. It really isn't that bad. Look at the library for things and online. They have books to help. If you are really stressed find some books about test take skills. That maybe what you need.

Don't worry about it -- since you obviously survived four years of college, two more tests aren't going to kill you.
