Computers benefit schools and learning a lot, but only if properly used. The school administrator must make sure that inappropriate sites are blocks. Also, students must be monitored so they use their time on the computers wisely.

A study in 2006 six says, that students and the regular use of computers in the classroom can actually have a positive effect on the students. There stress levels at school and there dislike of attending were lowered, not to mention the research and presentations done by students were much higher than those without. A Dr. Roer of Tripart University says, "The amount of interest in the students is phenomenal. Attention rates have seemed to improve, thus far leaving the students with a more fulfilled education."

Computers are great in school if they are used properly.

Here's what I have personnally witnessed:

7th grade using a software to create computer games

checking emails

looking up sports scores

powerpoint presentations for almost every class

playing SimCity or SimEarth

creating brochures for almost every class

Here's how I use computers in my courses:

learn to create business letters

creating graphs/charts to interpret information

netsmartz.org to educate about Internet safety

proper searching techniques

how to build a database

This is just a small sampling of what I've seen over 23 years...I was there when computers came into the classroom. Today, many teachers use them as babysitters in the same way that we have used TV for little kids.

It's time to use them properly. And 50% of my students cannot read cursive writing....not sure where that issue will go. I don't want anyone to think I don't believe in using computers in school, I just want them used properly. Save the games for home.

My fifth grader uses the school computer to start her assignments. Sometimes the teacher emails the documents to me so my daughter can finish it at home. I'm a little concerned that she doesn't really know how to type using the right fingers on the right keys. The teachers did show them the "home row," but I'm afraid she'll begin to have bad habits that will be difficult to undo later. I believe she does some research online, but she does most of that at home. We live in Georgia, in case you're looking for differences among states or regions.

The main thing I use them for (I teach physics) is to show the kids video clips of things we're studying. Most of the class was bored to tears until the day I found a video of the tacoma narrows bridge collapse on YouTube. Seeing it first hand helped a lot, and since then I've showed them several other short clips.
